GTA 6 at launch: single-player, no shark cards, no AI - what that actually means

Rockstar is selling a story game in November. GTA+ is for the old Online. Microtransactions and generative AI were both waved off for launch.

The store page says it without poetry: Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience. If you preordered hoping to grief strangers in Vice City on night one, that sentence is doing a lot of work. The free month of GTA+ stuffed into digital preorders is for the GTA Online we already have, the one still living in Los Santos.

A rooftop over Vice City is still a story beat in a single-player campaign, not a lobby.

This week Rockstar also told Kinda Funny, point blank, there are 'no monetisations in this game' and 'no AI' in it. As a fan who has bought too many shark cards, I am choosing to believe them for launch. I am not choosing to believe Online 2 will stay quiet forever.

Day one is a story, not a lobby

Rockstar has been careful. They did not say 'Online is cancelled'. They said the thing you are buying in November is single-player. GTA V did something similar at launch and then Online ate the decade. History is a hint, not a calendar invite.

Take-Two still prints money from the current GTA Online. Strauss Zelnick has talked like that cow is not going to the barn just because VI exists. If you only care about heists with friends, you might be playing two generations of GTA at once for a while. Annoying. Also kind of funny.

No shark cards in Leonida - at least not yet

Andy Cortez asked if you can spend real money inside the game. The answer he walked away with was no monetisations. For a single-player GTA, that should be the default, and it still felt like a relief to hear it out loud.

The asterisk is the Ultimate Edition. Extra shops, extra clothes, a tattoo parlor with a name. That is paid content gated by SKU, not a pause-menu cash shop. I do not love edition-locked stores. I also do not think it is the same disease as $100 whale packs. Standard still gets the whole story. Rockstar says you can upgrade later.

The 'no AI' line

Greg Miller asked if generative AI was used. Rockstar said no. Take-Two has been the rare publisher talking down AI-as-creativity, and they even cut an AI team earlier this year. I am glad. I want Jason's voice to come from a human who sat in a booth, not a model that almost sounds like him.

Will some tool have touched a spreadsheet somewhere? Probably. That is not what people mean when they ask this question. They mean: did a machine write the jokes and paint the skyline. Official answer on the record is no.

So what are you actually preordering?

A story about two people in Florida, on two consoles, with a preload on November 12. Not a new Online. Not a PC port. Not a disc. Not a 60fps promise. If that sentence still excites you, hit preorder. If you wanted a live-service Vice City on day one, wait for the next announcement and keep your GTA+ cancellation reminder.

I am preordering because I want the campaign. I am not pretending the Online question is solved. When they are ready to talk about lobbies, this page will get a new section instead of a fake date.
